Brooke & Josh loved the South of Grand location but had a hard time finding a home to meet their families needs. They came to Zenith early on so we could start working through the design process while they were closing on their new home. They were needing more space and an updated living environment to make it a forever home they could live in with their two younger children and with their help, we were able to make it happen!
We sat down for our first meeting and went over the wishlist they were hoping to have and the design style they were after: contemporary with a bit of a nod to the home’s traditional roots. There were not enough bedrooms on the main floor to accommodate their family so they hoped to add additional bedrooms and also expand square footage, if at all possible.
Challenge accepted.
We got to work on floor plans and construction that would include a dramatic kitchen overhaul, a two-level primary suite and garage addition, and upgraded living room.
We opened up the space between the previous kitchen, dining and living room to make room for a larger kitchen footprint and more natural flow between the spaces. This included eliminating a step-down into the sitting room to make the new kitchen feel like one large continuous space. We completely rearranged the kitchen to accommodate more cabinetry, larger appliances and a substantial central island for additional countertop space and seating for all those family holidays. White quartz countertops paired seamlessly with a scalloped matte white porcelain backsplash, easy to clean! We contrasted the main kitchen cabinetry, painted in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore, with a pop of natural hickory in the island cabinets. Matte black and gold finishes rounded out the luxurious, classic look in the heart of the home.
A two-story addition gave this family a garage (no more scraping in Iowa winters!) and a brand new primary bedroom suite. The primary bedroom was outfitted with a large walk-in closet, separate washer and dryer area, and large bathroom with dual vanities and a separate ‘wet room’ shower and bathtub space, essential for parents with young kids. Large windows ensured plenty of natural light streams in during the day. Natural woods, matte blacks and organic touches of greenery gave this space the serenity of a luxurious spa.
Original fixtures like the exterior limestone and built-ins in the living room add a classic touch to the home, while new light fixtures, tile detail, and wood flooring bring a clean and contemporary feel to the space. We suggested the clients keep the beams in the living room and simply paint them to keep the charm but update the look. The exterior of the home was updated from white to dark and we added an illuminated walkway leading to the front door.
